Appalachian State 34 Michigan 32
In an auspicious debut for Michigan playing against a Division I-AA level opponent, the Wolverines dropped their season opener to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in front of 109,218 stunned fans in Ann Arbor. Here is the game recap, boxscore, play-by-play chart (.pdf), player participation chart, postgame notes, photos, and quotes. Much analysis to follow when I stop crying. Go Blue!

I am a Buckeye fan. I am not going to taunt the U of M for its disappointing outcome today. I will however give anyone reading this something to consider. Buckeye fans ground their teeth with the frustrating outcomes during the Cooper era. The play calling was dismal and uninspired. Yet Cooper did not (would not?) learn from his mistakes and insisted on fitting a square peg into a round hole. I have not seen John Cooper in some time and I suspect both he and Lloyd Carr were abducted by aliens. Cooper's brain was put into Carr's body and that creature was returned to earth.
Think about it.
Michigan and Notre Dame both devsatated on opening day. I love it.
I am a Buckeye fan. I've enjoyed having Carr on your sidelines the last few seasons. However today's fiasco makes the conference look bad... we all screwed the bowl season last year, but this... it almost makes me want to cry. But then it happened to you, so there is a God.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Congrats App State. Looks like a long season for UM.
Whether Bowl division or championship division App State brought "Black Saturday" to the big house and out played Michigan. I guess you could say, "David wanted it more."
Don't fire Carr yet, give him a few more years to rebuild. It's too much fun watching the Buckeyes beat him every November to stop the fun now. Go Blew!!!!!!!!!!
This is bad for Big Ten Football. I was really hoping for Michigan to come to Camp Randall undefeated. Would have made for a great story line if both teams would have been undefeated. Go Badgers!!!
I attended the game today (section 14)
a) the App State team was solid and played well; people should give them some credit. That said, this team beats UM once in 25 games with a ton of breaks(well, today is that day!)
b) Michigan season ticket holders in my section all left after the 3rd...pathetic...so much for the "loyal Michigan fanbase" [with the big wins comes responsibility for the losses...]. It's sad that these people are more concerned with their parking arrangements than with an exciting end to the game
c)the end of the game was awesome and the fans who stayed were amazing. I might reference a local quote the season ticket holders could consider "those who stay will be champions"...see you soon fairweather fans
Now think about this . If Michigan beats Ohio State this year. Who will be the laughingstock of the big ten. Go Blue.
The Wimpy Ten...every year a joke!!!!
Once again, the national embarassment of the Big Ten brought on by UM continues..if nothing else, at least Mike Hart may finally shut his big f--- mouth..thank god for that.
GO BUCKEYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"If Michigan beats Ohio State, who will be the laughingstock?"
1. That's big assumption based on recent history and yesterdays UM game.
2. Ohio State did not lose to a Divsion 2 School..nice try...
To quote Beavis and Butthead: "heh heh, heh heh"
bye lloyd
maybe a sweater vest will help
2 bad so sad - not really
Go Bucks
App State put up the points when it counted, spread out the d and out quicked ya. App State prepared for this game, and now the App St team has done something NO One else ever has.....dazed and confused is the new maize and blue.
bowl games are always tough to lose, but this, did you see the fans predictions before the game....team just wasnt prepared for the App st. speed spread offense. we dont want to face these guys ever again.
Remember this ,a buckeye will always be a worthless nut. Go Blue
PSU fan here. Like the first comment here, I won't rag on U of M or their fans, but I will say this: there is NO reason to get rid of Lloyd Carr. I'm seeing fans calling for coach Carr's head, along with the rest of the coaching staff. If they hire new staff, that would only make things worse. New coaches would have to learn the entire offensive and defensive strategies, and that could prove to be even more disastrous for Michigan and its fans than just staying the course.
I'm just hoping that Michigan fans are a bit more logical after the sting of defeat subsides... then again, that might stick around for a looong time. I'm going to say it, this ranks right up there with the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team's Miracle On Ice game.
